Possible oil refinery company coming to Athens

ATHENS, AL (WAFF)- An oil refinery may be coming to Athens. The?refinery will take?used oil and refine it for re-use.

Company officials say by doing it this way it will?reduce dependence on foreign oil.

Alabama Green Lubricants wants to use the land off of that is located between Airport Road and Heron Drive.

Company officials say they would hire 25 to 30 workers and pay them $18 to $22 an hour.

The Athens planning commission is on board with this addition to the city.

The city would have to annex 13 acres of unincorporated county land, then rezone 24 acres as a heavy industry area.

Mayor Ronnie Marks said this is an environmentally sound business, and a growing market. The motor oil industry is starting to use more recycled oil and he says more supply will create a bigger marketplace.

"It's my understanding from them that the Mercedes plant over Germany leaves their plant will all refined oil. You have a Mercedes plant here in Alabama with oil that's not refined We want to get to that point where we reuse and not depend on foreign oil as much as we have," said Mayor Marks.

The refinery would be about 500 feet from the nearest home. A few people who lives nearby?say they?concerned because they haven't heard about the plan.

The city will hold a public meeting on April 9th to answer any questions.? The company would buy the land and make a $38 million investment.
