The Seattle Bouldering Project is searching for a world-class Head Routesetter to lead a staff of Routesetters in creating a product of the highest quality. This position is .50-.75FTE but can be combined with other roles (such as instruction, coaching, etc.) to create a 1.0FTE position.

HEAD ROUTESETTER

POSITION SUMMARY

The Head Routesetter will be responsible for overseeing and implementing all aspects of routesetting and climbing at the Seattle Bouldering Project. The Head Routesetter also provides individual and group coaching and instruction for the gym, develops youth climbing programs, and facilitates climbing competitions at the gym. This role includes supporting routesetters and routesetters-in-training in their development, maintaining the highest degrees of quality in climbing, hiring and staffing for routesetting needs, and working with the General Manager and Operations Manager in the overall management of the climbing and safety at the gym. The Head Routesetter will contribute to forwarding the goals and mission of the climbing at the Seattle Bouldering Project as a vital part of the gym?s offerings. Seattle Bouldering Project Routesetting Goals: 1. Provide the highest quality of climbing in the industry. 2. Offer clean and well-maintained routes on state-of-the-art holds set by innovative routesetters. 3. Maintain a regular schedule of route rotation in order to keep clients enthused about our climbing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES Routesetting ? Develop and maintain a routesetting schedule, distributing in an appropriate manner a difficulty and length/height concentration for climbs within the gym. ? Track and maintain appropriate distribution throughout the gym. ? Be available on a regular basis to meet with groups and to advertise the Seattle Bouldering Project. ? Communicate regularly with General Managers and Operations Manager about the quality of climbing in the gym. ? Communicate with Programs Coordinator to create and maintain routes for children and special programming. ? Point-person for the quality control for routes and climbing for the gym, acting as an arbiter and modifier of climbing routes during forerunning. ? Cleaning of walls and surrounding areas as required. ? Label routes and maintain quality of route presentation and labeling in the gym, adjusting labels and tape as required. ? Develop and maintain a route distribution and age display. ? Set an equitable number of personal routes. ? Organize and implement appropriate and industry-leading safety systems during routesetting. ? Organize, facilitate, and set routes for competitions at the gym. ? Other duties as assigned.

Staff Management and Training ? To design, organize, implement, and oversee a routesetter safety training program in order to protect our staff and customers. ? Maintain the highest standards of risk management, in line with CWA and other industry standards. ? Participate with General Managers and Operations Manager to hire talented and qualified routesetters and routesetters-in-training. ? Schedule routesetting staff via organized, economical, and efficient staffing systems. ? Maintain employee motivation and job satisfaction via dynamic leadership. ? Communicate with staff to understand availability and share scheduling. ? Maintain discipline and professionalism among staff. ? Ensure routesetter staff quality by participating in assessment and evaluation. ? Communicate with General Operations Manager and routesetter staff, as needed, to ensure staff quality. ? Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Acquisition, Storage, and Maintenance ? Collaborate with Operations Manager and General Managers for regular acquisition of new holds. ? Maintain organized, clean, and efficient backstock systems. ? Ensure that holds and equipment remains clean, functioning, and high quality. ? Research new offerings in routesetting and holds. ? Maintain and collaborate with Operations Manager and General Managers routesetter tools (wrenches, ladders, carpet sliders, etc.).

Personal and Group Instruction ? Regular climbing classes as assigned ? Individual instruction as assigned. ? Other duties as assigned.

SCOPE OF WORK Considerable autonomy in routesetting and climbing programming under the direction of General Managers and Operations Manager.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise team of routesetters and routesetters-in-training. Supervise assistant instructors.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS It is imperative to recognize that the gym?s clientele must maintain excitement about routes, rotation, holds, and routesetting?and that this excitement will often be communicated with the Head Routesetter. The Head Routesetter is, in many ways, the figurehead of climbing at the SBP and must conduct themselves in accordance.

WORKING CONDITIONS Though the routesetting will be performed on a regular basis, many duties require an ability to be flexible in working hours: Weekday, weekends, and nights may be required.
