Police: 3 killed at NC lumber company; gunman hurt

(AP) ? A disgruntled employee opened fire at a lumber company early Friday, killing three people and injuring another person before he went home and turned the gun on himself, leaving him wounded, authorities said.

The person injured at the McBride Lumber Co. in central North Carolina was flown to a hospital, Sheriff Dempsey Owens said. The gunman was also taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The shooter left a note, but police would not reveal what it said. Authorities also haven't released the names of the shooting victims or gunman.

Owens said witnesses reported the gunman was a disgruntled employee, though it wasn't clear what he was upset over.

The company's founder, Dorothy McBride, said she was shocked.

"Oh, my God, I can't believe it," said McBride, who was not at the business at the time of the shootings. "I just can't talk about it right now. I have to find out more."

A family-owned business, the company makes pallets and treated wood for furniture and other products.

A person who answered the phone at the business said they had no comment.

See No Evil

It was easy for the Supreme Court to decide that such powerful evidence undermining the testimony of the state?s only evidence was ?material? and that there was a ?reasonable probability? that it would have made a difference at trial and that the conviction needed to be reversed (the standard under Brady v. Maryland, which entitles the defense to have such exculpatory evidence). It was, said eight justices, serious misconduct to hide such evidence. All the jury heard about was the photo array, four months after the crime, when the eyewitness first identified Smith, and then they saw him at trial, testifying with absolute confidence.

RBS to cut 3,500 jobs in investment banking (AP)

LONDON ? Taxpayer-backed Royal Bank of Scotland announced Thursday it would cut 3,500 jobs, part of a reorganization of its investment banking arm as it reins in its ambitions to be a global financial player.

The cuts, which are to be phased in over three years, will largely affect employees in Global Banking and Markets, which had offered advice on mergers and acquisitions. The division has 18,900 employees overall.

"Our goal from these changes is to be more focused for customers, more conservatively funded, more efficient and with better, more stable returns for shareholders overall," Chief Executive Stephen Hester said in a statement.

The bank has been under pressure to pull back from its expansion goals. The strategy also dovetails with British government efforts to force banks to separate their retail operations from their more volatile investment banking.

Under former chief Fred Goodwin, RBS led a takeover of Dutch bank ABN Amro in 2007, only to run into huge problems in 2008, when the global financial crisis caused a severe credit crunch. The group collapsed in 2008 and taxpayers had to bail it out. It is now 83 percent owned by the taxpayer.

Write-offs on the ABN deal helped swell the bank's losses in 2008 to 24.3 billion pounds, a U.K. record.

The monumental losses put Goodwin ? nicknamed "Fred the Shred" for his vigorous cost-cutting at RBS ? under intense scrutiny. He left RBS with a pension of 703,000 pounds ($1.1 million) per year after leading the expansion spree, though he later negotiated an agreement to take a lump sum payment of 2.8 million and scaled back his pension payments.

The latest cuts are in addition to the 2,000 losses announced by the bank last summer. The fresh losses mean 11,000 posts have been cut at the division from the pre-banking crisis headcount of 24,000. RBS said it will now exit from the mergers and acquisitions.

"This strategy has succeeded in making RBS stronger and placing us on the road to long-term success," Hester said.

The job losses come amid reports that John Hourican, who will continue to oversee the restructuring of the business, is in line to pick up 4 million pounds ($6.1 million) in long-term incentive shares awarded in 2009.

Union representatives sharply criticized the cuts.

"It is a disgrace that while on a daily basis stories are emerging about the massive bonuses at the top of the bank, increasing numbers of jobs are being cut from amongst the hard-working staff," said David Fleming, a Unite national officer.

The End of Cred

On 2009?s Deeper Than Rap, however, Ross emerged, for the first time, as an artist worth taking seriously. Shrugging off the licit truths that had come to light the year before, he came into focus. The album begins with a breathtaking exercise in bravado: the song ?Mafia Music,? in which Ross, uninterrupted by a hook and accompanied by a choir and steamrolling organs, delivers 76 consecutive bars stocked with vivid turns of phrase (?trunk full of white, car smell like blue cheese?), autobiographical glimpses (?once had a job pouring tar up on the roof?), onomatopoeia (?woof!?), twisty, alliterative internal rhymes (?paper that I?m making got her taking photos naked ? dodging debacles like potholes in Jamaica?), name-droppy self-mythologizing (?Martin had a dream, Bob got high/ I still do both but somehow I got by?) and, in sideways nods to the C.O. revelations, threats to harm both cops and 50 Cent, who?d begun snidely referring to Ross as Officer Ricky. In 2010, Ross released Teflon Don, a fantastic album that doubled down on the tales of outsize, outlaw living. Drake and Busta Rhymes?more traditionally dazzling MCs than Ross?hailed it as the year?s best album. On one track, Ross sampled a Bobby Seale speech, audaciously linking his drug-dealing tales to a nobler history of struggle. Last year, Nas, as totemic a figure of classy, ?golden age? rap as you?ll find, joined the appreciation society: ?Rick is on fire,? he told BET. ?Rick has got a strong grip on the game.?

Chief asks for unity to battle oil pipeline

Published: January 10, 2012 7:00 AM

Dear Sir:

As Laksamshu Chief of the Wet?suwet?en Nation in the Bulkley Valley, there is one question which I think reaches across our communities.

And that is what do we value about our watersheds?

From my observation, First Nations and non First Nations have the same answers to this question. Clean water, wild salmon runs, and healthy wildlife.

There is little that divides us when it comes to enjoyment and love of the local wilderness.

In our current fight, to resist Enbridge?s tar sands pipeline, all hands will be required. As the oil barons pressure local First Nations with their divide and conquer tactics, we will need support from outside our First Nations communities.

My experience shows me that many local residents share the same fears and concerns for our future as is expressed within our First Nations communities.

We need to view the Northern Gateway proposal as a mutual battle and one that is not left solely to First Nations.

My request is that you get active to protect the rivers and land you care about.

We must stand together.

Chief Kloum?Khun
