AKKA Ski Retriever detects where you lost your skiing gear with waterproof radio tags

AKKA Ski Retriever detects where you lost your skiing gear with waterproof Bluetooth tags

AKKA wants you to find your snowsports gear, minus hours lost digging in the snow. Its Ski Retriever project, being pitched on Kickstarter, pairs a handheld 1-inch OLED display with multiple tags, with audio and visual feedback delivered as you get closer to your lost property and visible notification for both distance and direction. The tags can be connected into the base plate of your skis, through a cold-weather adhesive mount, or simply lashed to your equipment through lanyard loops. The creators have even have a list of wants they're hoping to add to the Ski Retriever if they get the necessary funding, including security geo-tagging, and certification to be used in search efforts after an avalanche. Kickstarter preorder customers will pick up a handset and two tags to start with -- the founders are hoping to raise $100,000.

Happy holidays for indie bookstores ? but not for Barnes

Barnes & Noble reported disappointing holiday sales numbers while, in contrast, some independent bookstores said they had their best month ever.

Sales of their Nook products, which Barnes & Noble has been pushing over the past several months, dropped 12.6 percent to $311 million over the shopping season and total sales of retail operations also experienced a steep decline, dropping 10.9 percent to $1.2 billion. The company did not release sales figures detailing the number of Nook e-readers sold. Digital products, such as e-books, did increase by 13.1 percent, but the store reported that products that weren?t Nooks experienced a sales drop of 3.1 percent because of a lack of traffic in stores.

?Nook device sales got off to a good start over the Black Friday period, but then fell short of expectations for the balance of the holiday,? Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch said in a statement. ?We are examining the root cause of the December shortfall in sales, and will adjust our strategies accordingly going forward.?

The book giant is still locked in a struggle with online behemoth Amazon, and the Nook device was supposed to be the ace up the company's sleeve that could enable them to keep abreast in the marketplace, which means that low sales over the holiday season must have been particularly disconcerting.

?They are not selling the devices, they are not selling books and traffic is down,? Mike Shatzkin, founder and chief executive of publishing consultant company Idea Logical, told The New York Times. ?I?m looking for an optimistic sign and not seeing one. It is concerning.?

By contrast, many independent bookstores seemed to have enjoyed very successful holiday seasons. The Brooklyn, N.Y. bookstore WORD reported to bookseller industry newsletter Shelf Awareness that they had their best month ever during December with a 40 percent increase in sales, while the bookstore Duck?s Cottage in Duck, North Carolina, had a similarly happy story to tell.

?Dozens of stores have reported that they had their best year ever in 2012,? American Booksellers Association CEO Oren Teicher told Shelf Awareness. Teicher said that, based on numbers from the 500 or so bookstores that report to the IndieBound Bestseller lists, in November independent bookstores were 10 percent ahead of their 2011 sales numbers.

?[People are] starting to realize that maybe they shouldn't buy everything from Amazon and want to shop local,? Duck?s Cottage co-owner Jamie Layton told Shelf Awareness.

(AP) ? Two undefeated teams, three Heisman Trophy finalists, five lead changes and 19 seconds left when the winning touchdown was scored.

No other BCS title game has come close to matching that perfect formula for broad appeal. The 2006 tilt between Texas and Southern California was on in nearly 22 percent of American homes with televisions; the second-best number is under 18 percent.

Now, seven years later, a matchup may finally challenge that Rose Bowl's TV ratings record.

No. 1 Notre Dame, so popular it can stay independent and negotiate its own television contract, is competing for its first championship since the 1988 season. Notre Dame's opponent, No. 2 Alabama, is a big name in its own right, made bigger by two titles in the last three years and the Southeastern Conference's run of six straight crowns.

"It sets up really remarkable possibilities," said Burke Magnus, ESPN's senior vice president for college sports programming.

Just as fans and media break down position-by-position battles for the Fighting Irish and Crimson Tide, a look at how this year's matchup stacks up against the record-holders from 2006:

? NAME RECOGNITION. Texas and USC are hardly slouches in the tradition and popularity departments, but Notre Dame is in its own category. Plus there's the added intrigue of the Irish's title drought.

"It definitely raises the bar of the hype and the buzz of this national championship compared to any of the other games I've had the good fortune to call," ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said.

Even if much of the interest sprouts from fans rooting against one of the teams.

"Notre Dame is the Yankees, is the Celtics, the Lakers and so on, the Dallas Cowboys. They're polarizing, which helps," Magnus said. "Actually, both of them are right now because of the SEC factor, and Alabama has been the standard bearer for that."

Herbstreit chuckled at the thought of some fans vowing not to watch because they detest both teams.

"Anybody who takes the time to make a comment like that clearly will be watching the game," he said. "They'll in fact watch the four hours of pregame we have before the game and be blogging and tweeting about how wrong everybody is on those shows."

? STAR POWER. Texas-USC sparkled far brighter here. The three Heisman finalists that season were from those two teams: Trojans quarterback Matt Leinart (who won the previous year) and running back Reggie Bush (who won this time, before later returning the trophy because of NCAA violations) and Longhorns quarterback Vince Young. All were skill position players believed at the time to have promising NFL futures.

Notre Dame's Heisman finalist is a defensive guy, linebacker Manti Te'o. Alabama's four first-team All-Americans are offensive linemen or defenders.

? ANTICIPATION. Texas and USC were the undisputed top teams in college football ? the only undefeated squads in the country who led the rankings all season. Alabama has one loss, and while there has been almost no controversy as to whether the Tide deserves to play in the title game, the late-season rankings scramble that led to this game doesn't carry quite the same buzz.

? MARKET SIZE. In the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball, postseason viewership often varies significantly based on whether the teams involved hail from cities big or small. In college football, that's less of a factor, though it didn't hurt the 2006 title game that a school from Los Angeles, the country's second-largest market, was involved.

The program from South Bend, Ind., of course is a classic example of national appeal.

"(Alabama is) the franchise right now and another mega brand," Magnus said. "It doesn't matter that it's Tuscaloosa ? the TV markets don't matter when it comes to teams like that."

? ON-FIELD THEATER. One of the biggest factors in the final rating won't be known until the game kicks off. If the score stays close, more viewers will stick around to the end ? and more will join in. Magnus believes the rise of social media will increase the audience of tight games even more than in the past, as casual fans learn through Twitter or Facebook that they can catch a tense finish if they tune in.

The Longhorns' 41-38 win featured 10 touchdowns, and the teams combined to score five times in the fourth quarter. Neither school ever led by more than 12 points.

Notre Dame has had a penchant for close games all season and Alabama also has lately. But the other half of the entertainment equation ? high scoring ? may be less likely with these two programs. Each allows fewer than 11 points a game.

? RAW NUMBERS. The Texas-USC title game set the record with a 21.7 rating ? 22 percent higher than the next best BCS championship. No. 2 all-time was the 2001 Oklahoma-Florida State final with a 17.8. The best ratings since 2006 were a 17.4 for both the 2007 Florida-Ohio State and 2008 LSU-Ohio State matchups.

The 2006 championship was on ABC, but the BCS games have since moved to cable. ESPN is in about 14 percent fewer homes than the traditional broadcast networks, though executives note that college football fans are more likely than the general population to have cable. Ratings since the switch have seemingly been more affected by the matchups and competitiveness of games than by their availability.

Regular-season viewership, while still strong, was down for college football this year. On ESPN's networks, the average audience decreased more than 10 percent on ABC, almost 4 percent on ESPN, and nearly 13 percent on ESPN2 from 2011. SEC games on CBS also dropped 10 percent.

For the four BCS games so far, preliminary ratings are up 1 percent on ESPN from last season.

But Notre Dame and Alabama have already shown their ability to lure big audiences. The rating for the Tide's SEC title game against Georgia ? essentially a national semifinal ? was up 34 percent from the previous year's LSU-Georgia matchup. With an average of 16.2 million viewers, it was the season's most-watched college football game before the bowls.

No. 2 was Notre Dame's win over USC to clinch a berth in the BCS title game with 16.1 million viewers. That was the highest-rated Saturday night regular-season game on ABC since at least 1991.

Herbstreit is one of those sports fans who watch golf only when Tiger Woods is in contention on a Sunday. He considers Notre Dame-Alabama to be the college football equivalent of that.

"Without a doubt," he said, "if you're a college football fan, or even if you're a fringe college football fan, you're going to watch."

Lessons from Capitol Hill: How NOT to Negotiate?

Lessons from Capitol Hill: How NOT to Negotiate

Even though 2013 is now three days old, let me officially wish you a Happy New Year! Like me, I?m sure you can look back at 2012 and see the varying highs and lows that have brought us to where we are now, but let?s not dwell too long on the past. Let?s learn what we can from the successes and failures of last year, and then look forward to what we can accomplish and achieve in the New Year.

My first blog post of 2013 comes courtesy of my business partner ? Mercantile?s Chairman of the Board, Geof Longstaff. He?s the elder statesman of our company, and I value his perspective and opinions on many issues. Yesterday, the first work day of the New Year, Geof sent an all-staff email about the recent fiscal cliff negotiations and how we can learn from them. As usual, there are a few poignant business principles we should all examine?and apply to our lives and businesses, so I?d like to share them with you. The following are Geof?s words, and I encourage you to read them carefully and take them to heart.

????????????

I am repeatedly asked how I feel about 2013 with all the upheaval in Washington and all the uncertainty that surrounds our daily lives. The negativity that is pervasive in the print media and talk media is overwhelming and the apparent inability to even be civil to one another in Washington just goes against my core values. Yet, in spite of this I am unequivocally Positive in my feelings about the future. Why? Because the future is all about Me and You.

First, I believe I won the lottery because I was born an American and, in spite of all our problems, this is still the greatest country in the world in which to practice individual freedoms. While others believe their ability to succeed is based upon the happenings of others or the actions of the government, I believe my success is based on my own God-given talents to just make it happen. I work with a great bunch of people who share this ability to succeed and accomplish things in spite of the environment. While I know we have to deal with individuals on the outside who don?t share this sense of accomplishment, I know that all of us feel we are in control of our own destinies. For that, I am eternally grateful and I am proud to work with such a dedicated group of people who (as Nike says) ?just do it.? Now let?s go out and do just that.

This weekend, I paid pretty close attention to the ?fiscal cliff? negotiations in Washington that have been ongoing ever since the election. Wow, if you ever want a lesson in ?How not to negotiate? this was a textbook case. Since much of our business practice involves negotiation, I thought it would be helpful to learn from a high profile situation that went terribly wrong. First, understand one thing. This was an odd negotiation, because usually in a simple negotiation one person or party receives something and the other person gets paid an equal amount in some sort of payment. The sale of real estate is a great example, as one person gets the property and the other party gets money, and the negotiation is all about the price. In this case the two parties were negotiating over issues that all the parties were going to have to live with as the results affected the entire populace, albeit to different degrees. I liken it to two grandchildren negotiating something on behalf of their joint grandmother. Both are supposed to have her best interests at heart. Alas, I digress.

The art of negotiation is not about lying, cheating or obfuscating your way into a more advantageous position. It is always about trust. How you handle yourself is very important. Once trust between the parties is lost, the process is doomed for failure and a poor ending. This was certainly the case in the events of this past week where all trust between the parties was lost and it took two old friends, who had built trust over many years, to make a deal. This is not to say that the process can?t be contentious and result in spirited debate; but in the end if trust is lost, then in spite of the outcome the parties will have a difficult road ahead. The lesson to be learned here is to keep your head, maintain your character to deal in good faith, and let the weight of your argument win the day. That does not mean that you can?t use obvious advantages to carry your cause; just let it be part of the weight of your argument.

Finally, negotiation should assume that success is driven by being willing to live by the agreement that you made and being of a mindset that you could negotiate again with this same person or party. Certainly there are negotiations which don?t go this way and once it is over you pledge, for whatever reason, not to do business with this person again. However, in the Congress, we elect people for terms and they must be responsive for that entire term. To use the media to lambast your opponent, or to spike the ball with chants of victory, or to publicly swear at a member of the opposition ? those things only serve to entrench the other side and make future contact more difficult. I can?t say how unimpressed I am about the leadership in Washington. The only saving grace is the fact that both sides got up from the table unhappy with the final results, and that is probably a sign that the deal was pretty balanced.

Lesson to be learned: Negotiation is an art but there are certain tenets which we can incorporate in our business life as well as our personal life. Keep your cool (I personally have trouble with this one); be passionate about your position without being argumentative; be honest and forthright in keeping with your character; and act respectfully when it is over, whether you are the winner or the vanquished.

Have a great 2013.

Geof

Rainfall, brain infection linked in sub-Saharan Africa

Jan. 4, 2013 ? The amount of rainfall affects the number of infant infections leading to hydrocephalus in Uganda, according to a team of researchers who are the first to demonstrate that these brain infections are linked to climate.

Hydrocephalus -- literally "water on the brain" -- is characterized by the build-up of the fluid that is normally within and surrounding the brain, leading to brain swelling. The swelling will cause brain damage or death if not treated. Even if treated, there is only a one-third chance of a child maintaining a normal life after post-infectious hydrocephalus develops, and that chance is dependent on whether the child has received the best treatment possible.

"The most common need for a child to require neurosurgery around the world is hydrocephalus," said Steven J. Schiff, the Brush Chair Professor of Engineering, director of the Penn State Center for Neural Engineering and a team member.

In sub-Saharan Africa, upward of 100,000 cases of post-infectious hydrocephalus a year are estimated to occur. The majority of these cases occur after a newborn has suffered from neonatal sepsis, a blood infection that occurs within the first four weeks of life, the researchers reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics.

Benjamin C. Warf, associate professor of neurosurgery, Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital, noticed that about three or four months after an infant in East Africa had an infection like neonatal sepsis, the child would often return to the clinic with a rapidly growing head -- hydrocephalus. Schiff joined Warf to help figure out what caused this disease so frequently.

Schiff and colleagues tracked 696 hydrocephalus cases in Ugandan infants between the years 2000 and 2005. The researchers obtained localized rainfall data for the same time frame through NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather satellites using the African Rainfall Estimation Algorithm developed at the U.S. NOAA Climate Prediction Center.

Uganda has two peak rainfall seasons, in spring and fall. By comparing the data from NOAA and the hydrocephalus cases, the researchers found that instances of the disorder rose significantly at four different times throughout the year -- before and after the peak of each rainy season, when the amount of rainfall was at intermediate levels. In Uganda an intermediate rainfall is about 6 inches of rain per month.

Schiff and colleagues previously noted that different bacteria appear associated with post-infectious hydrocephalus at different seasons of the year. While the researchers have not yet characterized the full spectrum of bacteria causing hydrocephalus in so many infants, they note that environmental conditions affect conditions supporting bacterial growth, and that the amount of rain can quench bacterial infections. The moisture level clearly affects the number of cases of hydrocephalus in this region of East Africa.

"Hydrocephalus is the first major neurosurgical condition linked to climate," said Schiff, who is also professor of neurosurgery, engineering science and mechanics, and physics, and a faculty member of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. "This means that a substantial component of these cases are almost certainly driven from the environmental conditions, and that means they are potentially preventable if we understand the routes and mechanisms of infection better."

Other members of the research team were Sylvia L. Ranjeva, who was then a Penn State Schreyer Honors College undergraduate and now at the University of Chicago Medical School, and Timothy D. Sauer, professor of mathematics, George Mason University.

The Penn State Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute; the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement (CURE) Program; and the Harvey F. Brush Endowment funds supported this work.

NZ Property Market Drying Up This Summer: Realestate.co.nz ... - Stuff

The New Zealand property market is drying up this summer with a record low number of houses available, according to industry website Realestate.co.nz.

Inventory, or the number of weeks it would take to sell all housing stock on the market, sunk to a seasonally-adjusted 27 weeks in December, compared to a long-term average of 39 weeks.

Sixteen of the 19 regions across the country saw falls in property availability, with Auckland undergoing its biggest drought in the five years since records began.

The country's largest property market registered a new low of 14 weeks of housing stock, down 11 per cent from the previous month, and 43 per cent on the same time last year.

Record lows were also seen in Otago (20 weeks) and Waikato (32 weeks), despite a surge of new listings towards the tail-end of last year.

Realestate.co.nz marketing manager Paul McKenzie said new listings were usually down in December, but had plummeted 37 per cent from the previous month and 3 per cent on an annual basis.

"For this to happen at a time when demand is so high is significant," he said.

"Compared to the peak of the market in 2007, new listings are down 26 per cent."

McKenzie said the tight inventory would continue to tilt the market firmly in favour of sellers.

However, a slight easing in asking prices to a seasonally-adjusted average of $422,636 would provide some relief for house-hunters.

"Following the record high asking prices recorded over the previous two months, questions of housing affordability were naturally coming into the frame," said McKenzie.

"However, buyer demand is still clearly strong, so seller confidence is likely to remain high for some time to come."

Due to the limitations of the small sample size and seasonally adjusted data, ASB senior economist Jane Turner interpreted the figures with greater caution than usual.

"Nonetheless, the results suggest the housing market has potentially tightened further in December with supply failing to respond to the increase in demand over 2012," she said.

Turner said the Reserve Bank would not be able to tolerate the momentum in house prices and credit growth for much longer.

There was a "growing possibility" that it would step in with macro-prudential tools - such as limits on lending - to ease pressure in the housing market.

Macau casino revenue in 2012 rose to $38 billion - seattlepi.com

HONG KONG (AP) ? Casino revenue in Macau climbed 13.5 percent last year to a record $38 billion, as the Asian gambling hub reinforced its position as the world's biggest gambling market.

Gross revenue from Macau's 35 casinos also hit a monthly record in December, rising 20 percent to 28.2 billion Macau patacas ($3.5 billion), according to data posted on the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau on Wednesday.

But gambling revenue growth eased off in 2012 from the year before, when it rocketed 42 percent to $33.5 billion, as China's economy slowed and wealthy mainland Chinese gamblers held back amid fears about a crackdown on corruption.

Analysts noted that the decline in Chinese high-rollers, who account for two-thirds of Macau casino revenue, has been offset by growing numbers of middle-class Chinese.

Chinese gamblers account for the bulk of visitors to Macau, a former Portuguese colony that returned to Chinese control in 1999. The semiautonomous region, an hour by ferry west of Hong Kong, is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.

Despite the moderating growth, casino operators have pushed ahead with expansion plans in Macau, where companies such as Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Wynn Resorts Ltd. earn the bulk of their profits. Some 90 percent of Sands' profit comes from Asia, including half from its Macau properties.

In October, MGM received approval to build a $2.5 billion casino resort, its second in Macau, while local operator SJM Holdings received land approval to build a 2,000-room hotel with 700 gambling tables. Earlier, Sands said it plans a Parisian-themed resort that would be its fourth casino project while Wynn unveiled plans for a $4 billion resort.

The new projects, which are expected to start opening by mid-2015 at the earliest, will be centered around the Cotai Strip, an area of reclaimed land between two islands that is modeled on the Las Vegas Strip.

Macau's economy has boomed since it ended a four-decade casino monopoly in 2002. Gambling revenue there has now swept far past Las Vegas, where growth has been flat in recent years as the market has matured. Las Vegas revenue totaled $6.1 billion in 2011.

The Sacred Search - Marriage Right

One of our writers, Ryan Carboneau explores single hood in an interview?with author, Gary Thomas,?of Sacred Marriage and The Sacred Search: What if it?s not about who you marry, but why?

Ryan: Gary, thank you for taking the time to sit down with me and talk about your new book. You are probably best known for writing the Christian classic, Sacred Marriage. Now, you have written a book for singles called The Sacred Search. What motivated you to write this book? What are your thoughts on the daily challenges facing singles today?

Gary: Sadly, most Christians marry for the same reasons as non-Christians?romantic feelings, sexual chemistry, and perceived relational happiness. Anyone can look around and see that couples who marry primarily on the basis of these motivations often either lapse into divorce or suffer through a less than fulfilling marriage, but few today ask the question that will prevent a troublesome match: ?Why do I want to get married, and how should that affect who I marry?? These basic questions need to be addressed before you settle on a particular person.

Ryan: You just mentioned romance and sexual attraction. In a world where outer beauty is valued more highly than inner beauty, how important is sexual attraction in marriage?

Gary:?The marriage choice is different from simply choosing a partner or friend. If there is no sexual attraction, you?re going to have a difficult time fulfilling your role as a husband or wife. Sex is a signifcant aspect of marriage, and if you don?t think you can enjoy and enthusiastically particpate in sexual relations, you shouldn?t get married. In the long-term however, sexual intimacy dies in most marriages due to relational issues more than a lack of physical attraction. Two people who genuinely care for each other, are kind to each other, share a mission togetether, and want to grow together naturally feel a desire to serve each other, and that includes sexual expression.

Secondly, never forget that you?re also choosing your future kids? mom or dad, so a person?s suitability to fulfill that role needs to be taken into consideration. A certain degree of friendship and yes, compatibility, can foster the maintenance of a spiritual bond.? These are all important issues that should be added to the overarching end of a shared spiritual mission.? (p. 52)

Ryan: An incredibly powerful statement and chapter title in The Sacred Search is ?You don?t want what you think you want.??So, what is it then, that men and women really want?

Gary: What I cite in the book is just one example: for instance,?women are more likely to develop romantic feelings for dominant men. No problem there, except for the fact that dominant men are also less likely to develop into the kind of husbands that can relate well to woman and build a life of intimacy together.

So, if a woman just follows her feelings, she is likely to fall for a man who will thrill her as a boyfriend for 18 months, and frustrate her as a husband for 18 years. Men are proven to be driven largely by physical appearance. Yet physical appearance is the first thing that fades in human development. If you choose someone for their character and godliness, you?re choosing someone who will grow into an even better partner as the years pass. If you choose someone for their physical appearance, you?re choosing someone who is getting older by the day?and no matter how much surgery a woman undergoes, 50 year olds don?t look like 25 year olds. Which means that choosing a marriage partner is like choosing breakfast on steriods, in this sense: I might ?want? a doughnut; in fact, there are very few days when a doughnut doesn?t sound like a great idea. But I also know that a doughnut is a really bad choice, so I go with something else?

Ryan: As we both know, infatuation can play a large role in romantic relationships. What are some signs that can help alert people to know whether they are simply infatuated with one another, or truly in love?

Gary: Your brain is focused on two tasks during infatuation: getting that person and keeping him or her. Your brain doesn?t have anything left over to evaluate whether someone is worth getting or worth keeping. (p. 36)?

We live in a culture that is infatuated with infatuation, for some understandable reasons. Psychologists liken infatuation to an addiction; indeed, it affects the same regions of our brains as cocaine or gambling. Just as some people are more prone to alcoholism than others, however, some people are more genetically predisposed to ?fall in love? more often and more intensely. This is an important point to keep in mind if the one you?ve given your heart to doesn?t seem as ?desperately? in love as you do. Infatuation doesn?t affect everyone in the same way.

Neurologically, a person?s sense of security, self-esteem, spiritual maturity, and personality all affect how they fall in love, what that experience feels like, and the intensity with which they feel those emotions. For example, an insecure person with low self-esteem is likely to be clingy and more obsessive about the relationship than someone who is relatively secure with a high self-esteem. A woman from a broken home who has a high fear of abandonment often wants to rush things to ?lock in? the relationship, pushing for an early engagement. She?s more concerned about avoiding another relational loss than she is about finding the best possible match. Two relatively secure individuals can respect and love each other without experiencing obsessive thinking, euphoric mood swings, or desperate clinginess. The absence of these markers doesn?t mean they are less in love than other couples; it might just mean they are more grounded as individuals.

While the experience of infatuation is not exactly the same for any two individuals, when it comes, it is thrilling, powerful, promising, and even transcendent. I don?t want to diminish the mystery and poetry of a truly delicious romantic attachment and ?soul connection,? but in reality you?re living through a fairly predictable and observable neurochemical reaction. And here?s something you need to know: the state of infatuation actually impedes your ability to objectively discern your partner?s faults and weaknesses. (p. 32-33)

Ryan: Sexual purity is a hot topic today for Christians and non-Christians alike. Many couples that we have counseled have had some serious reservations about sharing their past. How open should couples be about their sexual history?

Gary:?One of the things I love about marriage is how God calls two broken people together and secures a convenant relationship that supplies the necessary stability for two people to heal and grow (seeking righteousness). You need to count the cost, however, in determing how much healing your future spouse? needs. Before you get married, it?s essential to discuss your sexual past ? not in overly vivid detail, but with enough disclosure to give each other an honest appraisal of the issues you?ll be facing after marriage. Let me put it this way: if I got married concealing a hundred-thousand-dollar debt, a serious health issue, or a prior felony that? made future employment problematic, everyone would admit that I had committed an act of fraud.? In the same way, a future spouse deserves to know how much effort it?s going to take to participate in God?s healing your sexual past, in part to ascertain how much healing you?ve already initiated and how much healing he or she is willing to be a part of.

If your potential spouse hasn?t dealt with that past in a healthy way, in fact, I recommend you don?t proceed into marriage (and this may be something a counselor needs to help the two of you work through). But if you do marry that person, you will undercut the security, intimacy, and stability of your marriage by ever using it (one?s past) as a weapon. This is one of those things where even one accusatory slipup can be very, very hurtful. Count the cost, but once you do, you must let it go. (pp.187, 193, 195)

Ryan: If it?s not about who, but why you marry, when would you recommend a person or couple begin reading The Sacred Search.

Gary: Anyone old enough to be interested in dating is old enough to read this book and think about these questions. It?s never too late to read it, even if you?re engaged. In that case, it will either confirm your decision or help you avoid making a poor choice. In fact, one of the last chapters helps you deal with ?wedding day? doubts, so I wish every engaged person would consider that before their wedding day.

Ryan:? This brings me to my last question. You have created a couples conversation guide to serve as a companion to The Sacred Search. My wife and I do a fair bit of premarital counseling and we are excited about using your workbook as a resource. What can couples expect when going through the guide?

Gary: The Sacred Search Couple?s Conversation Guide is our pre-marital workbook. It will lead you through 9 ?must have? conversations that you and your future spouse need to go through before you get married. It goes deep?one person even called it ?premarital counseling on steroids??but it?ll prepare you to have what we call a ?doubt free wedding day? because you?ll have prayerfully considered every possible objection. Couples spend so much time preparing for a ceremony that lasts, on average, about 30 minutes. We want them to spend hours preparing for the relational challenges of marriage. I wrote it with a Ph.D. psychologist who has been counseling couples for over 30 years, so this is based in real-world experience.

udonkey2: Tips for B2B Sales Online | Personable Follow Up Tools ...

Selling business to business (B2B) through online tools can be extremely difficult. The internet if full of slimy scams that make you look bad when you are simply contacted by someone online, asking about their current services or products related to your business. The prospect wonders if you are simply a robot that sent this email out to a bazillion of prospects hoping that a sliver percent respond. Cutting through the spam clutter is difficult but possible using a few methods.

Personalize the Email & Offer Value

In my business of selling website services I come across a lot of ugly websites. This encourages me to reach out to the owner of the business in order to?esquire?about what on earth they are thinking?! A simple email is a great way to reach them and supplies basic information for them to consider. As long as you send them a personal email you won?t be marked automatically as spam. However, when the prospect receives the email they possibly will classify you in their own minds as spam. One way to assure them you are not spam is to start the email with a personalized message. ?Hey Mike, I was in your restaurant eating last week?the meatloaf tasted awesome?and I noticed you needed [insert service]??

It?s also important to take some time give them something they find valuable. If you sell business insurance, put some basic tips that are related to their business and how you see they are lacking. I generally put together an analysis video of their website so they can watch and learn a few quick tips about why their website isn?t functioning as they might think. Much of the information I give them they could do on their own.

This might seem like ?a lot of preparation simply to contact one prospect. At times this is true but it sure beats getting caught in a spam filter and never have a chance to begin with.

Follow Up With a Phone Call

Follow up to make sure they realize you are human. I generally send a follow up email after my initial email and if they don?t respond I give them a call on the phone. I can?t count the times I have called someone and asked, ?Did you get a chance to review my email?? They then apologize because they thought I was spam. This gives them confidence to look through my email and consider the information.

Last Resort: Sent a Personalized Postcard

Many times I email a prospect and get no response. I send a follow up email?no response. I give them a call and get pushed to their voice mail again and again?no response. At this point I have put a lot of effort into contacting this person so I want to make sure I take every opportunity to let them know I am wanting to help them. The best last resort is to send a card in the mail. There are great services out there for this. The one I use is SendOutCards.com. You can do it all online and they make it simple. I generally send a postcard with a picture of their website on the front. This gets their attention when it comes with a stack of mail coupons and bills. Just yesterday I had a prospect (that I had already given up on) call me and say they got my postcard and apologized for not responding sooner.

Here's One Twisted Way To Advertise Cremations - Business Insider

There's no easy way to advertise cremation services.

So Australia's Just Cremations decided to go for broke with this jaw dropping promotion:?

BuzzFeed's Copyranter noted that this isn't Just Cremations' first odd ad. A Redditor posted this visual that Just Cremations placed on the back of the bus. Its message isn't as self explanatory.

Just Cremations isn't the only comedic cremation provider out there.
